Is Facebook Your Only Online Presence?

It is important that you take control of your online presence. The only way to do this is to have control over your own website. Sites such as Facebook provide you with the technology to quickly and easily build an online presence, but the big problem with this is that you don’t own your Facebook page. What happens if Facebook changes its rules, or makes you pay for services that were previously free? You have no option but to conform to these rules. If you want a Facebook page, you have to agree to their rules.

Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with having a Facebook page, it increases your online presence and also allows you to engage with visitors whom you may never have crossed paths with, but what happens if Facebook suddenly disappears or decides that your Facebook page does not conform to their terms and conditions and it is taken down?

Your only peace of mind is to take control of your online presence and build your own website. You decide what features and information you want on your website. The best scenario is to link all of your social media accounts such as Facebook and Twitter to your website so that you can connect and build your online presence. If for some unforeseen reason Facebook no longer exists or your Facebook page has been taken down, it doesn’t matter, you have not invested all of your eggs in one basket, you simply continue building your online presence through your website.

Plan Your Website Content

Have you been looking for information on the web and come across a website with the information you need, but it hasn’t been updated for a number of months or even years. You want to know the information you are reading is current and can help you. Is this the experience you want to give your visitors (or potential customers)?

Keeping you website content up to date may seem like an overwhelming task. Where am I possibly going to find new information not once, but regularly? First of all, you will need a plan for your website so you know what has to be updated and when. Updating your website with fresh content can be simple. Some ideas that may help include:

Is you product seasonal? If so, focus on updating your website with information that directly relates to your product.

Are there complimentary products that you could write about that can help you promote your product.

How about adding instructions on how to use your product.

Write a review about your product focusing on the benefits of using it.

Depending on the type of website you have, updating your content may be simple or not. If you have a static html web page, it can be difficult to find your way through all of the website code to update some text in your page. If you need to create a new page, you may have to employ the services of your web designer to create one. This can be timely and expensive.

If you have a website built on a content management system such as a WordPress website, updating your website can be simple, even creating new pages for your website. A content management system allows you to manage the content of your website from an adminstration dashboard that you log in to. The most popular content management system available today is WordPress and best of all, it’s free.

Stay organized by scheduling your content to appear on your website.

You can install the WordPress framework and build a website that allows you to create new pages and posts and best of all, you can schedule your new pages and posts to be published in the future. This can save you a lot of time. By using WordPress, you can publish new information on your website that will allow visitors to comment and share through social media what you have to say.

Updating your website content doesn’t have to be a chore.

Updating your website content doesn’t have to be a chore and if you have the right framework and some planning in place, it can help you attract more visitors and potential customers.

PayPal is one of the most popular services used for online purchasing. It can be considered an Online Financial Broker as it acts as a third party for holding money. PayPal has gained a solid reputation for business integrity through its policies and practices which has earnt the trust of both buyers and sellers.

Buyers do not need a PayPal account to purchase your products or services online. When directed to PayPal to pay for their purchases, your customer has the choice of signing in and using their account or entering their personal details and credit card details to complete the purchase. It does not require any special software or technology, which has boosted its popularity amongst all levels of buyers and sellers globally.

PayPal provides a number of account types that you can choose from, depending on your business. Here is a link to the PayPal Australia account types:

Account Types

When you sign up for a business account with PayPal, the transaction fees are simple and easy to understand. The fees charged by PayPal are dependant upon your revenue each month. To understand this a little more, here is a link to the PayPal Australia fee structure for business accounts:

Transaction Fees

PayPal earns its revenue by charging a percentage of the transaction that has taken place. There are many sellers whose revenue may only be a few hundred dollars a month to sellers who are earning tens of thousands of dollars each month, both can easily calculate the cost of a transaction and absorb this cost into the price of their product or service.

When choosing to offer PayPal as your payment method, you will need to complete a few settings to properly configure PayPal so it integrates smoothly with your website/shopping cart.

If you are considering using PayPal as a payment option for your website, here are a few resources that should help you set up and configure your account.

Why should I backup my website?

Most of us have had the experience of losing our data on our computer, whether from a virus or a hardware failure. How many of us can say that we diligently backed up our important files on a regular basis just in case something like this happened? Take this scenario and apply it to a website.

A website contains content about your business and services. If you sell your products or services online, you will have a shopping cart that contains all of your content relating to your customers, orders, sales and stock. Losing any or all of this content could be disastrous to your business and livelihood. Think about this, if you have a bricks and mortar business, the first thing you would do is insure for anything that could potentially affect your business. Your insurance for your website is regular backups of your website content.

Usually a bricks and mortar business is insured for fire, theft, natural disasters etc. A website should be insured against hackers, viruses or hardware failures, a regular website backup will do this. Take ownership of your website and understand how it works and what it needs. This doesn’t mean you have to become an IT geek, if you have an understanding of how a website works and why you need to do certain tasks, you will then have an expectation and understanding of how your web hosting provider should be supporting your website.

Your website is one of the most important assets of your business.

If you don’t know what level of support you are being offered by your web hosting provider, talk to them and ask what would happen if your website was hacked or you unexpectedly lost all of your content. Your website is one of the most important assets of your business, if you don’t pay it the attention it deserves, you may be risking the success of your business, especially if you own an online business.
