Okay, here’s a scenario for you that I’m sure is quite common and you’ve had this experience yourself.

Sally needs a tradesman for some work to be done on her home.

Sally opens the Yellow Pages to find a tradesman, but which type of tradesman does she need? All of the ads are basically the same, a couple of dot points showing the services provided and a phone number.

How does Sally choose the tradesman who is right for the job? She reads all of the ads, looking for something that stands out …. she needs more information. She notices some of the ads include websites.

Sally begins using the Internet and visits these websites.

Sally can now compare these tradesman and their services by reading the additional information about each business and view photos of projects they have completed. Some of the websites even have testimonials from satisfied customers.

Sally can now make an informed decision about which tradesman to hire. After the work is completed, Sally gives the tradesman a testimonial to add to the website … consider this an online version of word of mouth advertising.

When you have a business, one important factor in maintaining its profitability is the ability to bring in new customers. It does not matter whether you own a local service type business or you feature products for sale, customers will be at the heart of your business and finding effective ways to grow your customer base is essential for long term growth and success. With this in mind, it is imperative that you understand how today’s customers shop and find the services that they need.

Many people are now doing a great deal of their shopping online. Not only is it convenient, but it is an excellent way for them to learn more about a particular business and find helpful reviews while comparing prices and services. Meeting the needs of these customers requires that you get your business online. A well designed website can be an excellent way to attract new customers and increase the profitability of your business.

The first step in getting your business online will be to find a respected company that can help design the right website for your particular business. They can help you determine exactly what you need in a website and provide a number of design options for you to consider. While it might be tempting to choose a design based on personal preference, this is a step that you should spend some time evaluating. Customers who find your website should feel comfortable navigating and reading its content. A website that is too distracting or hard to navigate will end up losing customers to a competitor.

If you sell products, you will most likely want an online store. The important thing will be to get your business online so that you can begin taking advantage of the potential customers who are surfing the internet looking for what you have to offer.

Owners that create a small business website often think their job is done. The reality is that having visibility on the Internet only starts with the publishing of a site. Getting easily found on the web by customers and prospects is an ongoing task.

Search Engines and Destination Traffic

Even before your small business website is created, it is important to spend time understanding how sites are found. There are two ways people end up on a website. The first is by choice. Individuals can type in your website address and be taken straight to the site. That makes it important to publish your domain name on all your marketing materials. Social media referrals and likes on Facebook can also be important in generating destination traffic.

Use of search engines is the second way people find you on the Internet. Because search engine traffic is increasingly important in finding new customers, search visibility and ranking are important. For a small business website, the use of the right keywords in creating your domain and website are critical to the process. Even with major competition, a local business can get excellent search traffic with the right keyword selection. The process is called Search Engine Optimization or SEO. It simply means making your business highly relevant to the searches that customers and prospects make.

Maximizing Traffic for a Small Business Website

Once a properly built website is up and running, the small business owner will want to focus on the other key social media sources of traffic. These include LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. There may be others worth your time depending on your products and services. Having activity with these online media can make an impact on your search engine rankings.

There are other methods to bring traffic to your website. If new prospects are important to your business, it is worth spending a little time learning and using these methods to build traffic.

Before hiring anyone to build your website, clearly define for yourself and your designer what the website will do. If you have unclear expectations, it can extend the project time frame and ultimately result in a website you are not happy with. It is much easier to spend the money now and get the perfect website than to wing it and “upgrade later”.

2. How Will Your Website Be Managed and Maintained and By Whom?

It is important to have a clear plan in place for how the website will be managed once it has been launched. Most website designers can either offer or recommend webmaster services. You will need to make a decision between outsourcing the management and maintenance of your website or finding a solution that makes it easy for a member of your staff or yourself to add new content. Content management systems are powerful solutions that allow you to easily add and manage content on your website.

3. How Will the Site Represent Your Brand?

Generic, bland websites are a dime a dozen. How will your website clearly represent your brand? It is well worth hiring a website designer with marketing experience who can help guide your vision into becoming a website. From the colours of the website to the way information is laid out, everything visitors see is a representation of your business brand.

4. How Will Visitors Find Your Website?

It is important that you create a marketing plan before building your site – at least have a concept on paper. This will help you build the site with those marketing strategies in mind. How will you market your website and what kind of budget do you plan on allocating to the growth of the website after it is launched? A website does not automatically generate traffic once it is live. You must promote it through social media, search engine optimization and offline marketing channels.

5. What Percentage of Business Do You Expect Your Business to Generate?

It is a good idea to outline early on how much business you expect your website to generate. It may not be 100% accurate, but it will make it easier to budget accordingly. All too often, businesses shift their efforts online, expecting 30-40% of their sales to come from the web, but they move either too much or too little of their advertising budget online. Try to match the expected sales to the budget for those sales.

A website is a big investment and one that will pay off over time for your business if it is well-built, targeted to your potential customers and presented in a clear, efficient way. Plan ahead by completing a website planning questionnaire and make sure your website designer knows exactly what you want before you do anything. A helpful resource is our free ebook, Taking Your Offline Business Online.

Many business owners question the value of a website. Since their customers are used to contacting the business by calling or sending letters, how useful can a website really be? The Internet is changing how important a website is for a business to succeed, and businesses who fail to take advantage of what a website can help accomplish are missing out on an important way to help their businesses grow and succeed.

A business’s branding is crucial. When many of us think about a particular business, its logo and any associated tags pop
into our heads. A website helps to create and reinforce this branding into the minds of customers.

Put simply, websites act as business cards that give customers necessary information to contact the business; however,
websites allow far more creativity than a simple business card. With a professionally designed website, businesses can
project an image of professionalism and show that they pay close attention to detail. The image a good websites leaves in the
minds of customers is irreplaceable.

Further, websites give customers a new way to reach out and contact the business. Phone books are increasingly being thrown away or recycled as most business information can be found online more quickly.

If a customer can’t find a business through the major search engines, he or she is likely to simply find a competitor. Some customers prefer to send emails to their business contacts instead of calling on the phone. By setting up a website, businesses give customers an easy way to find the right email addresses to contact.

Finally, customers who need to send a business a letter are likely to turn to the Internet to find the right address; having this address in an easily accessible online location simplifies this process for the customer.

Perhaps most importantly, websites greatly enhance a business’s visibility. More and more customers are using the Internet to find businesses, and a business needs to have a website to convert them into paying customers.

Even if a business shows up in a directory, customers want to see the business’s website before committing. With the growing popularity of smart phones and other smart devices, businesses can expect this trend to continue into the foreseeable future.

An online presence in no longer just an added convenience for customers; it is now a necessity to gain them in the first place.

Fortunately, the popularity of websites has ensured that qualified help is readily available and affordable. By working with a web developer that understands your requirements and can help a business create its online presence, businesses can have their websites up and running quickly and at an affordable rate.

Whether you have only recently started your business or have been in business for many years, you have probably heard and been told more than once how important it is to have a website. It’s not just trendy any more – it’s a necessity, but if you’re new to the Internet or a technophobe, the prospect can be terrifying. Here are three reasons why your business needs a website. It’s time to stop worrying and start acting, before your competition does it first.

1. Increasingly Web Savvy Audience

What was once a techie sub-culture has now become the mainstream. More and more people, both men and women who are running households and businesses were raised with computers and Internet access in the house. They not only know how to use it for research, but prefer it over storefront shopping.

A growing proportion of the population looks for new products online, they expect a user-friendly website and a way to interact with you and your staff. That means you need, at the very least, a website.

2. Growing Mobile and eCommerce Markets

Because your potential customers are increasingly web-savvy, they are also much more likely to purchase the things they need while online. So, you need a way to offer products and services online. Your website needs to provide product information, purchasing links, and if at all possible, a mobile friendly option for users to view and buy on their phones and tablets.

Before you can do any of that, however, you need a website so you can get your brand out there.

3. Marketing “with”, Not “at” Your Potential Customers

The Internet and social media like Facebook and YouTube have fundamentally transformed marketing. People expect you to interact with them, not to sell at them. They want to be part of your business and to feel comfortable asking questions and commenting on information about your business and its employees.

This is possible offline, but online is the perfect forum to create these relationships with your prospects with a minimal investment. A website provides a platform for this, giving you the opportunity to write and publish blog posts, connect through social media and generate ongoing relationships that help you sell more product.

A website is step one in your online strategy. Eventually you’ll want to expand into social media, e-commerce and email marketing, but today, right now, you can get started by setting out a clear plan to launch a new website.

Take a look at our website planning tool to get you started and download our free ebook – Taking Your Offline Business Online.

Is Facebook Your Only Online Presence?

It is important that you take control of your online presence. The only way to do this is to have control over your own website. Sites such as Facebook provide you with the technology to quickly and easily build an online presence, but the big problem with this is that you don’t own your Facebook page. What happens if Facebook changes its rules, or makes you pay for services that were previously free? You have no option but to conform to these rules. If you want a Facebook page, you have to agree to their rules.

Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with having a Facebook page, it increases your online presence and also allows you to engage with visitors whom you may never have crossed paths with, but what happens if Facebook suddenly disappears or decides that your Facebook page does not conform to their terms and conditions and it is taken down?

Your only peace of mind is to take control of your online presence and build your own website. You decide what features and information you want on your website. The best scenario is to link all of your social media accounts such as Facebook and Twitter to your website so that you can connect and build your online presence. If for some unforeseen reason Facebook no longer exists or your Facebook page has been taken down, it doesn’t matter, you have not invested all of your eggs in one basket, you simply continue building your online presence through your website.
